Indian IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav endorses Maples Navigation 




Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw publicly endorsed India's indigenous navigation app, Maples, on Saturday. He highlighted its advanced features during a video demonstration from his car and announced its upcoming integration with the Indian Railways. Vaishnaw posted on X, "Indigenous 'Maples' by MapmyIndia. Great features... Must try!" He demonstrated the app's capabilities, which include 3D junction views for flyovers and underpasses and accurate indoor navigation for multi-storey buildings. The IT minister emphasized that the app comes pre-installed in all Indian automotive OEMs and praised its ability to reflect India's growing digital capabilities.





Vaishnav stated that a Memorandum of Understanding will soon be signed between Indian Railways and MapmyIndia, allowing the app's technology to power railway navigation systems. This partnership represents a significant expansion of indigenous technology into critical national infrastructure, in line with the government's broader push for digital self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.[1][2]

This support has already had a significant impact for MapmyIndia, with the company seeing a tenfold increase in daily downloads in the last 10-15 days following government support. The New Delhi-based company is now advocating for mandatory pre-installation of Maps on smartphones manufactured under the production-based incentive (PLI) scheme, positioning itself as India's answer to foreign navigation platforms.[3]

Advanced safety features address navigation concerns

Maples distinguishes itself through safety-focused features, which are particularly relevant given the recent number of navigation-related accidents. The app provides 3D junction views to reduce confusion at complex intersections, real-time alerts for speed limits and accident blackspots, and accurate doorstep navigation. These capabilities address growing concerns about navigation reliability, following several incidents in which Google Maps has reportedly led drivers into dangerous situations, including a July 2025 incident in which a woman's car plunged into a ditch in Navi Mumbai.[1][2][3][4][5]

Unlike foreign platforms, Maples stores all map data and user information within India, ensuring data sovereignty and security. The app has already integrated with India Post's DIGIPIN system, creating the country's first comprehensive digital address system with geo-coded coordinates for every 3.8 square meter block.[6][7][8]

Vaishnav's support comes after similar government support for indigenous alternatives, including Home Minister Amit Shah's recent switch to Zoho Mail and ministerial support for the Arattai messaging app. Holding an 80–90% market share in OEM-fitted navigation systems and maintaining partnerships with around 10 government departments, the company is positioning itself as an essential digital infrastructure for India's technological independence.[9][10][6]
